THE KOBOLDMAKI FOUNDATION  (CORELLA, BOHOL)

The Philippine tarsier, found mainly on the island of Bohol in the southern Philippines, is a shy creature with big eyes and pointed ears. In fact, it's hard to believe that the tarsier macaque wasn't the main inspiration for the diminutive Star Wars Jedi Yoda, so great is the resemblance between the two.

The tarsier macaques are the second smallest primates in the world. They grow no taller than 15 cm and weigh about 100 g. What makes these nocturnal creatures so irresistible to humans are their huge eyes, which seem far too large for their tiny bodies. The eyes of tarsiers are fixed in their skulls, a limitation that is compensated for by an adaptation that allows the tarsier to turn its head 180 degrees to see its prey (and predators).

One of a tarsier macaque's most important hunting tools is its incredible sense of hearing. The tarsier's ability to detect sound is so acute that it must forgo foraging in heavy rain, as the sound of falling raindrops drowns out the sound of its prey's movement.

THE BALICASAG ISLAND (VISAYAS, PHILIPPINES)

Diving near Balicasag Islands in December or January offers views of hammerhead sharks and sometimes whale sharks. A sandy beach with shell corals surrounds the island, which in turn is fringed by a narrow cracked rock bank 10 to 55 meters wide. The 15 to 25 foot / 3 to 8 meter deep rocky reef ends in an underwater depth of more than 83 meters on the north and northwest sides of the reef. The top of the submarine cliffs are covered with hard corals, while the lower levels are covered with sponges and gorgonians. A thriving fish community is found near the cliffs. Here, jacks, mackerel and barracuda are seen in abundance. To the south and southwest, portions of the rocky reef are wider, reaching 20-23 meters. The submarine cliffs are dotted with caves and overhangs where large groupers, Napoleon wrasse and snappers hide.
